In a decisive move, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania has ordered the transfer of the Gopalpur Police Station case (186/16.06.2025) to the Crime Against Women and Children (CAW & CW) Wing of the CID-Crime Branch, Odisha Police.
Registered under Sections 71, 296, 351(3), and 310(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the case involves the alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old undergraduate student at Gopalpur sea beach on June 15, 2025.
Designated as a “Red Flag” case, the investigation is under the direct supervision of Inspector General (IG) Smt. Shyni S., with a specialised CAW & CW team already deployed to Gopalpur.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with Odisha Police arresting 10 individuals, including four juveniles. Three of the accused are alleged to have committed the gangrape, while others reportedly held the victim’s male friend captive, extorted money, and issued threats to silence the duo.
The swift response from the authorities reflects the gravity of the case, which has drawn national attention. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance, directing the Odisha government to provide compensation under Section 396 of the BNS and demanding an action report within three days.
DGP Khurania emphasised the Odisha Police’s commitment to delivering justice, stating that the CAW & CW Wing’s expertise will ensure a thorough and expedited investigation. The “Red Flag” status underscores the case’s priority, aiming to address the heinous crime with utmost urgency.
Local communities and activists have called for stringent action, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures at public spaces like Gopalpur beach.
