The Cyber Crime Unit of the Odisha Crime Branch has launched a strict crackdown on fake hotel websites to protect unsuspecting travelers during the Rath Yatra in Puri.
So far, the cyber team has identified 23 fake hotel websites, with the process of blocking them already underway. Among these, 15 websites have already been taken down, and action is being initiated against the remaining ones.
Cybercriminals are reportedly creating fake hotel websites during the Rath Yatra season, deceiving people by offering attractive discounts for online hotel bookings. These fraudulent sites target budget-conscious tourists searching for affordable accommodation during the high-demand festival period. Designed to closely resemble official websites, these fake pages often leave users unable to distinguish between real and fake platforms.
The fraudsters not only replicate the names of well-known hotels but also promote these sites on social media with guarantees of confirmed bookings and offers at unusually low prices. Many such fake sites are strategically placed at the top of Google search results, increasing their visibility and potential to deceive.
In light of these developments, the Crime Branch’s social media team has been actively monitoring, reporting, and issuing alerts since June 22, 2025. Their round-the-clock efforts will continue through the entire Rath Yatra season.
Due to several past incidents of online fraud, the Odisha Cyber Crime team is on high alert this year. Last year, many individuals across Odisha and other states lost substantial amounts of money due to similar scams.
To help citizens stay safe, the Crime Branch is sharing regular awareness messages and safety alerts through their official cyber safety social media pages. Citizens are encouraged to follow @cybercopodisha on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for real-time updates and security tips.
