The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has announced the implementation of a Gujarat-inspired model for selecting district presidents. Dubbed ‘Sangathan Suryan’, the initiative was unveiled by PCC President Bhakta Charan Das, marking a significant shift towards transparent and democratic processes in party leadership.
According to Das, senior Congress leaders from outside the state, along with PCC leadership, will tour various districts, engage with grassroots workers, and gather extensive feedback. Based on these findings, district presidents will be democratically chosen—a first-of-its-kind effort to empower local leadership and foster accountability.
“This initiative represents our commitment to internal democracy. We want the process to reflect the aspirations of the grassroots workers,” said Das.
The entire selection process is expected to conclude within a month, paving the way for what many believe could be a rejuvenated Congress machinery in the state ahead of upcoming political battles.
The move also signals a broader organisational revamp in line with successful models implemented in other Indian states. Whether this approach will re-energise the party’s base in Odisha remains to be seen—but it has undoubtedly set the political landscape abuzz.
