In a momentous event celebrating Odisha’s rich historical and political heritage, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi unveiled two books authored by veteran politician and former Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan.
The ceremony, held in Bhubaneswar, highlighted Harichandan’s contributions to Indian politics and literature, with CM Majhi delivering a heartfelt address that underscored the leader’s enduring impact on the state and nation.
The books, titled *E Mati Katha Kahe* (in Odia) and *Bakshi Jagabandhu: The Great Commander* (in English), were launched amid applause from dignitaries, intellectuals, and enthusiasts. In his speech, the Chief Minister described the occasion as a “proud and memorable moment,” emphasising Harichandan’s distinguished career. “The author is even more significant than the books themselves,” CM Majhi remarked, praising Harichandan’s principles, political identity, and decades of service to Odisha and India.
Harichandan, a prominent figure in Odisha politics, served as the founding president of the BJP’s Odisha unit and held the position four times. He was elected as an MLA five times between 1977 and 2009, serving as a cabinet minister on four occasions. Prior to his political rise, he was a respected lawyer at the Odisha High Court since 1972. During the Emergency period, Harichandan demonstrated his commitment to democracy by leading movements that led to his imprisonment, showcasing his “fearlessness and unwavering respect for the Constitution,” as noted by the CM.
As Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Harichandan made notable strides in education, health, agriculture, and social security, initiatives that continue to resonate with the public. The CM highlighted Harichandan’s eloquence in both Odia and English, establishing him as a nationally recognised orator.
Focusing on the books, CM Majhi lauded *Bakshi Jagabandhu: The Great Commander* for bringing to light the heroic saga of Bakshi Jagabandhu, the leader of the 1817 Paika Rebellion in Khordha, Odisha. He argued that this armed uprising, occurring 40 years before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, deserves recognition as India’s first war of independence. “This book will illuminate unexplored historical aspects and strengthen the case for acknowledging the Paika Rebellion on a national level,” the CM stated, noting Harichandan’s deep admiration for Bakshi’s courage, valor, and selflessness—qualities he sees mirrored in the author himself.
The Odia book *E Mati Katha Kahe* comprises 30 thought-provoking essays on diverse topics, including Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, democracy, media, Odia identity, world peace, and Lord Jagannath’s Nabakalebara festival. The Odisha CM expressed hope for an English translation to make these insights accessible nationwide. He also acknowledged Harichandan’s other literary works, such as plays, essays, short stories, and his acclaimed autobiography *Sangram Sarinahi*, which have been translated into English, Hindi, and Telugu, promoting Odia literature across India.
The CM concluded by extending warm wishes to Harichandan, praying for his good health under the blessings of Lord Jagannath. He affirmed that Harichandan’s writings would inspire future generations with lessons in patriotism, values, and democracy. “His life of experience is a guiding light for all of us,” CM Majhi said, comparing Harichandan to historical figures like Bakshi Jagabandhu and Gopabandhu Das for his uncompromised dedication to public service and literary pursuits.
The event drew a diverse audience, including students, researchers, and political figures, underscoring Harichandan’s status as a source of pride for Odisha and the country. Attendees expressed optimism that these books will serve as valuable resources for scholars and the general public alike, fostering a deeper appreciation for India’s freedom struggles and cultural ethos.
