Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi chaired a crucial meeting of the Tribal Advisory Council (TAC) at Lok Seva Bhawan today, emphasising the state’s commitment to the holistic development of tribal communities.

The meeting, attended by 18 members of the advisory panel along with the CM, focused on integrating economic progress with the preservation of tribal cultural and religious sentiments.

In his opening address, CM Majhi highlighted various central and state government schemes aimed at tribal welfare, stating, “For us, the tribal communities are not just beneficiaries of schemes; they are partners in our progress.” He stressed the need for special attention to the livelihood, economic development, and religious beliefs of Adivasis.

A key proposal from the Chief Minister was the introduction of a monthly allowance (bhattā) for priests in tribal villages, alongside dedicated efforts for the development and protection of their sacred worship sites (puja sthali). Majhi proposed further study and discussion on these matters to arrive at concrete decisions.

The council also decided to accelerate eco-tourism in tribal regions and promote tribal homestays to boost local economies. Emphasis was placed on preparing Record of Rights (RoR) for Scheduled Tribe lands in both Odia and English languages for greater accessibility and transparency.

Additionally, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Research and Training Institute (SCSTRTI) was directed to conduct thorough research and recommend the inclusion of more communities in the Scheduled Tribes list for the next TAC meeting. Proposals received from the Governor’s office were slated for review in future sessions.

An inter-departmental committee will examine Odisha-specific rules under the PESA (Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, with recommendations to be presented at the next council meeting. The council also supported introducing Arts and Commerce streams alongside Science in Classes 11 and 12 at Ekalavya Model Residential Schools.

The meeting saw the presence of key figures, including ST & SC Development Minister Nityananda Gond, Keonjhar MP Ananta Nayak, Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi, several MLAs, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, and other senior officials from relevant departments.

This meeting underscores the Odisha government’s priority on inclusive growth, ensuring tribal communities thrive as equal stakeholders in the state’s development journey.
