In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday evening spoke directly with the Odia medical student who was brutally assaulted in a gang-rape incident in Durgapur, West Bengal. The second-year student from Jaleswar, Odisha, studying at a local medical college, was attacked by unidentified assailants, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for immediate action.
During the phone conversation, which also included the victim’s mother and Odisha State Women’s Commission Chairperson Sovana Mohanty—who was present at the scene—Majhi extended his deepest sympathies and assured the family of unwavering support from the state government. “Don’t worry, the Odisha government is fully with you,” he told the distraught young woman, emphasising that every possible measure would be taken to ensure her recovery and future.
Majhi promised comprehensive arrangements for the victim’s medical treatment, psychological counselling, and seamless continuation of her education. “We are concerned about your swift recovery so you can resume normal life and advance in your studies. The state will make all necessary provisions as per the rules,” he added, underscoring the government’s commitment to her holistic rehabilitation.
Speaking to the victim’s mother, the Chief Minister reiterated that the perpetrators would face exemplary and expeditious punishment. “The Odisha government is relentlessly pursuing efforts to ensure the culprits receive swift and deterrent justice,” he stated, vowing to coordinate closely with West Bengal authorities for a thorough investigation.
Earlier in the day, Majhi had also conversed with the victim’s father, who expressed fears for her safety in West Bengal and requested her transfer back to Odisha for continued studies. The Chief Minister assured full cooperation and directed officials to explore secure relocation options.
The incident, which occurred recently in Durgapur, has left the 20-year-old under medical care, with her condition reported as stable but critical. Odisha officials are on the ground to provide on-site assistance and liaise with local police. Majhi advised Mohanty to maintain constant communication with the West Bengal government, leverage all available forums to build pressure, and expedite justice.
As the investigation unfolds, Majhi’s personal outreach highlights the human cost of the tragedy and the state’s resolve to stand by its daughters.
The Odisha government has also condemned the assault in the strongest terms and urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure rigorous action against the accused.
Updates on the victim’s health and legal proceedings are awaited.
