The state-level birth anniversary of Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Senapati, widely regarded as the father of modern Odia prose and a legendary figure in Odia literature, was observed today at Jaydev Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of Odisha, and the State-level Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Smruti Sansad.
Chief guest Dr. Amiya Pattnayak, former Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University of Culture, described Senapati as a “legendary personality” in the Odia language. He highlighted Senapati’s tireless efforts to promote women’s education in a conservative society, declaring that these contributions have made him truly immortal. Dr. Pattnayak praised Senapati’s rich prose style, innovative storytelling, and unforgettable fictional characters, calling his writing the pinnacle of Odisha’s literary tradition.
Senapati’s multifaceted contributions — as the driving force behind the Odia language movement, author of textbooks, pioneer in newspaper publishing, founder of printing presses, translator, and journalist — were also lauded. The chief guest noted that Senapati is rightly honoured with titles such as the Father of Odia Literature, King of Stories, and Vyasakabi.
Chief speaker Dr Lalatendu Das Mohapatra, former Director of the Centre for Judicial Archives under the Odisha High Court, called Senapati the supreme architect and trailblazer of modern Odia literature. He emphasised Senapati’s deep devotion to Odia soil, people, and motherland, as well as his role as a social reformer who vividly captured everyday societal issues through his writing. His works, now translated into several Indian languages, continue to earn widespread admiration.
Jiban Kumar Mohapatra, President of the Smruti Sansad, stressed Senapati’s original thinking and realistic portrayal of Odia life, stating that he will forever remain an eternal icon for the community.
Presiding over the event, Gurubir Singh, Director (Technical), Information and Public Relations Department, highlighted Senapati’s unforgettable role in combating superstitions and social evils. He remarked that classics like *Rebati*, *Chha Mana Atha Guntha*, and *Lachama* remain highly relevant today, with their characters still alive in contemporary society in different forms.
The programme began with floral tributes to Senapati’s portrait. Other dignitaries present included Ajay Mahanti (Secretary, Smruti Sansad), Sucheta Priyadarshini (Deputy Director, I&PR), Anshuman Sahu (Public Relations Officer), and senior officials from Jaydev Bhawan.
The event underscored Fakir Mohan Senapati’s enduring influence on Odia language, literature, and social reform, reminding attendees why he continues to be celebrated as one of Odisha’s greatest cultural icons.
