Odisha marked the 134th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar with a grand state-level celebration at Jaydev Bhawan in Bhubaneswar on April 14, 2025.
The event, organized by the Chief Minister’s Office, was a vibrant tribute to the architect of the Indian Constitution, whose vision for a just and inclusive society continues to inspire generations.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the chief guest at the event, paid heartfelt homage to Dr. Ambedkar, describing him not merely as a name but as a transformative ideology. “From a Dalit family to becoming the principal architect of India’s Constitution, Dr. Ambedkar’s life is a beacon of inspiration for future generations,” Majhi said. He emphasized Ambedkar’s role in laying the foundation for an inclusive social and political framework, ensuring equality and justice for all.
In a significant announcement, the Chief Minister revealed plans to construct an Ambedkar Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, which will house a library and auditorium to promote research on Ambedkar’s life, principles, and contributions. Additionally, a road and a park in the capital city will be named after the revered leader, symbolizing Odisha’s commitment to honoring his legacy. “These initiatives will ensure that Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals remain alive in our collective consciousness,” Majhi added.
The event highlighted Odisha’s strides toward uplifting marginalized communities. The Chief Minister noted that over ₹75,000 crore has been allocated for various development schemes targeting Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the state. These initiatives aim to provide better education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, aligning with Ambedkar’s vision of empowering the underprivileged.
Majhi also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in restoring Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy on a national scale. “Since Modi ji assumed office, Ambedkar’s contributions have been rightfully celebrated. Schemes like PM Awas Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, Swachh Bharat, and Ayushman Bharat have primarily benefited Dalits, tribals, and the poor, fulfilling Ambedkar’s dream of an equitable India,” he said. The Chief Minister underscored that Odisha’s implementation of central schemes has ensured the rights and welfare of marginalized sections.
The celebration also coincided with Odia New Year and Mahavir Jayanti, with Majhi extending greetings to the people of Odisha. He called for unity, urging citizens to rise above caste, religion, and gender divides to build an inclusive society—a fitting tribute to Ambedkar’s ideals. “A society free from discrimination, where every individual has equal opportunities, is the true homage to Babasaheb,” he remarked.
Reflecting on Ambedkar’s multifaceted legacy, Majhi highlighted his roles as an economist, jurist, social reformer, researcher, administrator, and visionary leader. He cited Articles 14 to 18 of the Constitution, which enshrine the Right to Equality, as a testament to Ambedkar’s commitment to positive discrimination for socially and economically backward communities. “These provisions ensure special rights in education, employment, and elections, empowering those historically marginalized,” he explained.
The Chief Minister also addressed past oversights, questioning why it took until 1990 for Ambedkar to be conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. “The maker of our Constitution and a champion of national unity was deliberately sidelined for years,” he said, crediting subsequent efforts to restore Ambedkar’s dignity.
Other dignitaries at the event echoed similar sentiments. Minister for SC and ST Development, Nityananda Gond, praised Ambedkar’s resilience in overcoming obstacles, stating, “He is an example of forging ahead despite adversity. Our Chief Minister is working tirelessly to realize Ambedkar’s vision for the upliftment of the oppressed.” Jajpur MP Dr. Rabindra Narayan Behera described Ambedkar as a “yuga purusha” (man of the era), emphasizing the government’s efforts to spread his principles to every village and household under PM Modi’s leadership.
Noted educationist and litterateur Professor Purnachandra Mallick highlighted Ambedkar’s unwavering faith in democracy and his lifelong dedication to a discrimination-free society. He recalled Ambedkar’s 1945 proposal at a Cuttack conference for a river dam to control Mahanadi floods, underscoring his foresight in addressing regional challenges.
The event also recognized meritorious students from various schools who participated in programs marking Bhubaneswar’s Foundation Day, with the Chief Minister presenting awards to celebrate their achievements. The ceremony concluded with a welcome address by Surendra Nath Parida, Director (Technical) of the Information and Public Relations Department, and a vote of thanks by Deputy Director Sucheta Priyadarshini.
The state-level Ambedkar Jayanti celebration reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to social justice and equality, drawing inspiration from Dr. Ambedkar’s enduring legacy.
As the state moves forward with initiatives like the Ambedkar Bhawan, it aims to create a society where every citizen enjoys equal rights and opportunities—a vision that resonates with Ambedkar’s timeless ideals.
