Odisha is set to experience a week-long spell of rainfall starting today, as a low-pressure area over the south Bay of Bengal intensifies and moves northwestward, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The system is expected to bring light to moderate showers across various parts of the state, offering relief from the scorching heat.
Cyclonic System Triggers Change in Weather
The low-pressure zone formed due to a cyclonic circulation over the south Bay of Bengal. Now shifting toward the west-central Bay, the system is projected to move northwest over the next 48 hours, increasing the chances of widespread rainfall across Odisha.
Rainfall Forecast & Affected Areas
April 8: Coastal districts, along with Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, are likely to receive light rain.
From April 9: Rainfall will extend to Sundargarh, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.
April 10–11: Peak rainfall activity, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is expected.
Through April 13: The rainy spell will continue, causing a 2–3°C drop in daytime temperatures.
Heatwave Conditions Persist in Some Areas
Despite the forecasted rain, heatwave conditions remained intense on Monday.
Angul recorded the highest temperature at 42.7°C, followed by:
Boudh: 41.8°C
Jharsuguda: 41.6°C

The IMD’s forecast comes as a much-needed respite, especially as Odisha grapples with water scarcity and high summer temperatures.
