Odisha is set for a prolonged spell of intense monsoonal activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts until July 7, driven by a cyclonic circulation over southern Jharkhand and active southwest monsoon currents.
An orange warning has been issued for districts including Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Koraput, Sonepur, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar on various days leading up to July 7. Thunderstorms, gusty surface winds reaching up to 40 kmph, and potential lightning activity are also expected in the warned areas.
The IMD has also cautioned of squally weather along the Odisha coast today, with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph gusting up to 55 kmph. The sea is predicted to remain rough to very rough, and fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea during this period.
District-Wise Warning Summary:
- July 2 & 5–6: Orange warnings for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Keonjhar.
- July 3–4: Yellow warnings for Balangir, Nuapada, Boudh, and nearby districts.
- July 7: Yellow warning remains for isolated parts of Jharsuguda and Bargarh, with reduced intensity thereafter.
Although weather conditions may ease post-July 7, the state is expected to witness light to moderate rainfall in scattered areas. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) is monitoring developments closely, while local administrations are on standby to manage any potential waterlogging, flash floods, or infrastructure disruptions.
With the monsoon’s intensified presence, citizens are urged to stay alert, follow weather advisories, and ensure precautionary safety measures amid the wet and turbulent conditions.
