The incident of a Nepali student’s suicide at KIIT University over a love affair was raised in the Odisha Assembly by BJP, BJD, and Congress MLAs.

They demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, calling it unfortunate. KIIT University expressed grief, apologized, and took actions including the dismissal of two security guards, two senior hostel officials, and an international relations officer, while also suspending the administrative officer. A 24-hour control room for Nepalese students has been set up.

Following the student’s death, student unrest broke out, leading to viral videos of security guards beating students. The police intervened and arrested the student involved in the love affair. The deceased student’s family, who arrived from Nepal, is seeking justice and has confidence in the Odisha government.

In the Assembly, MLAs from various parties expressed their sadness and demanded a proper investigation, highlighting the close relations between Odisha and Nepal and the importance of preventing such incidents in the future.

During the recess in the Assembly, BJD MLA Pratap Keshari Deb, BJP’s Tankadhar Tripathy, Babu Singh and Congress’ Tara Prasad Bahinipati raised the issue. They demanded a proper investigation into the matter. The MLAs said that this incident is very sad because Odisha’s relations with Nepal are close. The MLAs expressed their opinion that it is very painful to see the videos that are going viral and said that everyone should be careful so that such incidents do not happen again.
