The delayed monsoon session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly is set to commence tomorrow, running from September 18 to 25. Though brief in duration, political analysts predict this session will bring significant political heat.
As the session kicks off, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, is absent from Odisha. Following a bout of physical illness, he is currently in New Delhi attending social events. Sources indicate he will return soon, but questions remain about how actively he will engage upon his return.
All eyes will be on the BJD during this Assembly session. As the main opposition party, the focus is on what stance it adopts and what strategies it employs to fulfill its role. It will be interesting to observe how the BJD positions itself.
Post the general elections, the BJD abstained from voting in the Vice-Presidential election to avoid mistakes regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill. Although it could have supported the NDA candidate, it chose not to.
A major question looms: Will the BJD act as a vocal opponent in the Assembly, or will it soften its approach? Over the past two months, the party’s stance on issues like women’s atrocities and rape cases suggests a shift in its decision-making. It is possible that the party will adopt a tough, vocal posture in the Assembly based on this foundation.
In the changing landscape of politics, the BJD is now in a state of practical division from its affiliation with the BJP or NDA. The decision to abstain from voting in the Vice-Presidential election has effectively put a halt to this division process. However, if the BJD fails to properly balance its opposition role in the Assembly, it could prove detrimental to the party.
The Congress is the eternal enemy of the BJP. Beyond being a political rival, it is a major ideological and conceptual opponent. Naturally, this party will continue to strongly oppose the BJP government in the Assembly. But with fewer numbers, the role of the numerically stronger BJD will draw everyone’s attention more than the Congress.
From one incident of women’s atrocities to rape cases, the horrific mishaps during Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra, the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, acute fertiliser shortages, and black marketing causing distress to farmers—these have become major issues. How the BJD, as the opposition, presents these matters will be worth watching.
The BJD’s Assembly strategy will determine the party’s future. If the BJD does not launch an aggressive attack against the BJP, no one can prevent the party’s division. Additionally, senior BJD MLAs, who have been vocal lately, are also awaiting the Assembly session. They will express candid opinions, sarcasm, and warnings there. The Congress will align its voice with them.
In politics, it is natural that whatever issues the opposition raises in the Assembly, the government will respond. However, the manner in which the opposition raises these issues will be the subject of analysis.
