In a determined push to ensure clean and safe drinking water for every household in Odisha, Minister of Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water, Rabi Narayan Naik, conducted a comprehensive review of large-scale drinking water projects at the Panchayati Raj Institute in Bhubaneswar.
Emphasising the state’s commitment to the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme, the minister directed officials to expedite ongoing projects and ensure completion within stipulated timelines, with strict accountability measures for delays.
Of the 207 mega drinking water projects underway, 18 have been completed, with 54 more targeted for completion by December 2025. Over 10,000 villages and 552 gram panchayats have already achieved full coverage under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ initiative, with Nuapada district standing out as a trailblazer, ensuring 100% access to clean drinking water. This milestone marks a historic step toward transforming rural life in Odisha.
The state has also made significant strides in infrastructure development, with 5,27,570 tube wells/sanitary wells, 21,401 production wells, and 15,155 overhead tanks purified to ensure water safety. Of the 29,512 tube wells approved last year, 20,891 are nearing completion. Minister Naik stressed accountability, warning that agencies failing to meet deadlines would face penalties, and responsible officials could face salary deductions. The review meeting, attended by senior officials including Secretary S.N. Girish, Director (Drinking Water and Sanitation) Bhinit Bhardwaj, and Chief Engineer Ratnakar Shial, underscored the government’s resolve to make safe drinking water a reality for all. With rigorous monitoring and swift action, Odisha is setting a benchmark in rural water supply initiatives.
