A forest watcher lost his life while trying to control a blaze near Koilakhala forest under the Sinapali range in Nuapada district.

The deceased, identified as Maheswar Naik (30) of Dhingiamunda village, sustained severe burn injuries while attempting to contain the fire that broke out in the dense forest area.

Local residents rescued Naik in critical condition and rushed him to the Sinapali Community Health Centre. Doctors later referred him to the district hospital and subsequently to Raipur Medical College as his condition worsened. Despite prolonged treatment, he died during medical care.

Sources said Naik was part of a team working to douse the flames when he accidentally caught fire. The blaze spread rapidly due to dry leaves and strong winds, making containment efforts difficult. His colleagues and villagers tried to save him but failed to prevent serious injuries.

After the postmortem, authorities handed over the body to his family for cremation at his native village. The incident has sparked grief among forest staff and locals, who described Naik as a dedicated worker committed to protecting the region’s forests.

Residents have urged the district administration to provide compensation to Naik’s family, citing his service and sacrifice. Officials have begun an inquiry into the cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to his death.
