The Election Commission of India has officially issued a notification for the election to the office of the Vice President, scheduled for September 9, 2025.
This announcement marks the commencement of the nomination process, with August 21 as the final date for filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place on August 22, and candidates may withdraw their nominations until August 25.
The vice presidential post fell vacant on July 21 after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, citing health concerns. His term was originally set to end in August 2027. As per constitutional provisions, a mid-term elected Vice President is entitled to a full five-year tenure.
Eligibility criteria for candidates include Indian citizenship, a minimum age of 35 years, and qualification for election to the Rajya Sabha. Individuals holding any office of profit under the central or state governments are disqualified.
The Vice President is elected by members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated members of the Upper House. With five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha, the effective strength of the electoral college stands at 786. A candidate must secure at least 394 votes to win.
The ruling NDA coalition holds a significant advantage, commanding the support of 422 members across both Houses. Voting will follow the proportional representation system via a single transferable vote, conducted through a secret ballot.
This election assumes heightened significance as it fills the second-highest constitutional office in India, ensuring continuity in governance and parliamentary proceedings.
