The Indian Railways issued a clarification that no trains were cancelled, nor were any platform changes announced at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday evening, when a deadly stampede broke out, killing at least 18 passengers and injuring dozens more.
Northern Railways CPRO Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay stated that the stampede occurred due to an unprecedented number of Maha Kumbh devotees gathering at Platform 14 to board the Prayagraj Express.
The situation escalated when a passenger slipped and fell on the stairs, causing a chain reaction. The Railway Ministry has formed a high-level committee to investigate the incident, and compensation has been announced for the victims’ families.
