The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, will convene a landmark National Conference on the Rights of Transgender Persons on September 4, 2025, at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
Themed “Revamping Spaces, Reclaiming Voices,” the event aims to address systemic discrimination, promote inclusion, and amplify the lived experiences of transgender individuals across India.
Justice Shri V. Ramasubramanian, Chairperson of NHRC, will preside as Chief Guest. The conference will bring together a diverse panel of government officials, legal experts, civil society leaders, academics, law enforcement agencies, and community members for a day-long dialogue on policy priorities and social justice.
Key sessions will focus on:
- Strengthening Garima Greh shelters under the SMILE scheme
- Institutional care for gender non-conforming children and elderly transgender persons
- Building inclusive law enforcement frameworks and grievance redressal mechanisms
- Unlocking employment opportunities and showcasing success stories
The conference builds on NHRC’s 2023 Advisory on the Welfare of Transgender Persons and its recent field assessments of Garima Greh shelters. It seeks to identify gaps in implementation, recommend evidence-based reforms, and reaffirm India’s commitment to dignity, equality, and justice for all.
With participation from ministries, commissions, UN agencies, and grassroots organizations, the event is expected to catalyze transformative change and ensure that transgender persons are fully integrated into India’s social and institutional fabric.
