The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report about the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old college student on June 15, 2025, at Gopalpur sea beach in Ganjam district, Odisha.
The incident, described as a grave violation of human rights, has prompted the Commission to issue formal notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha.
According to reports, the young woman had visited the beach with a male friend during a festival celebration when she was reportedly overpowered by a group of ten men. Her companion was restrained while the perpetrators allegedly committed the assault. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised critical concerns over safety measures at tourist destinations.
The NHRC has directed the state authorities to submit a detailed report within two weeks. This includes updates on the ongoing police investigation, the condition and well-being of the victim, and any compensation, medical assistance, or counselling provided.
Following the assault, the victim was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for examination. Odisha police have confirmed the detention of seven suspects in connection with the case, and investigations are underway to apprehend others involved.
This incident has intensified calls for improved safety protocols in public spaces and faster judicial processes to ensure justice for victims of sexual violence. The NHRC emphasised that such grave violations must not go unaddressed, reinforcing its commitment to upholding the dignity and rights of all citizens.
