The body of a newborn baby girl was found floating in a pond at Bhishmagiri village under the Digapahandi block of Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to preliminary information, villagers spotted the infant’s body in a large pond locally known as Badabandha during the early hours and immediately informed the police. Responding promptly, police personnel reached the spot and recovered the body in the presence of local residents.
Suspected Abandonment, Investigation Underway
Initial findings suggest that the newborn may have been dumped into the pond late at night by unidentified individuals. While police suspect foul play, including the possibility of infanticide, officials have stated that the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine whether the baby was born alive and to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
Case Registered, Parents Being Traced
A case has been registered, and police have begun questioning local residents and collecting evidence to identify those responsible. Efforts are also underway to trace the parents of the newborn, police officials said.
Social Concern Highlighted
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing concern around abandonment of newborns and gender-based violence, despite existing laws and continued awareness campaigns aimed at preventing such acts.
Police have assured that the matter is being investigated thoroughly and that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
Further investigation is in progress.
