Benjamin Netanyahu surprised Narendra Modi by donning traditional Indian attire ahead of their joint dinner in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
The Israeli Prime Minister chose a stone-coloured Nehru jacket — popularly known as a “Modi jacket” — paired with a white kurta-style shirt. He completed the look with dark navy trousers and polished black dress shoes, blending Indian tradition with formal diplomacy.
Sharing the moment on X, Netanyahu wrote, “Before our joint dinner, I surprised my friend Prime Minister Modi by wearing traditional Indian attire.”
Prime Minister Modi later responded, praising the gesture and stating that the attire reflected respect for India’s rich culture and traditions.
Diplomatic Day at the Knesset
The sartorial moment came during a packed diplomatic schedule. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi addressed a Special Plenary session of the Knesset, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to speak in the Israeli Parliament.
He was received by Speaker Amir Ohana and accorded a ceremonial welcome. Prior to his address, Netanyahu, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, and Speaker Ohana expressed bipartisan support for strengthening India–Israel relations.
During the session, Modi was conferred the “Speaker of the Knesset Medal,” dedicating the honour to the enduring friendship and shared democratic values of both nations.
To mark the occasion, the Knesset building was illuminated in the colours of the Indian national flag — a first for an address by an Indian Prime Minister.
Focus on Strategic Partnership and Security
In his 32-minute speech, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the deep civilisational links between India and Israel, along with growing cooperation in technology, innovation, defence, and security.
Referring to shared security challenges, he reiterated both nations’ “zero tolerance” approach to terrorism. He also expressed condolences over the October 7 terror attack and emphasised that there can be no justification for such acts of violence.
At the same time, Modi reaffirmed India’s support for peace efforts in Gaza, describing them as essential for achieving a just and durable resolution.
Expanding Economic Cooperation
The Prime Minister noted that the proposed India–Israel Free Trade Agreement, currently under negotiation, could unlock significant untapped potential in bilateral trade.
This visit marks Modi’s second trip to Israel in nine years. During his 2017 visit to Tel Aviv, India and Israel elevated their bilateral relationship to a “strategic partnership,” paving the way for expanded collaboration across multiple sectors.
