New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed a new assessment model for the Class 12 board examinations.
This model would incorporate students’ marks from Classes 9, 10, and 11, emphasizing vocational and skill-based education more heavily.
Outlined in a report titled “Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards,” the proposal advocates for a cumulative evaluation system where 15 per cent of the final Class 12 score would be derived from Class 9, 20 per cent from Class 10, and 25 per cent from Class 11.
NCERT’s proposal suggests that students’ academic performance from Class 9 onwards will contribute to their ultimate Class 12 board scores. This recommendation, put forward by PARAKH—a regulatory body formed by NCERT—to the Ministry of Education in July 2024, seeks a standardized assessment system across all educational boards in India.
Mandatory Subjects
After year-long consultations with 32 educational boards, the report recommends making vocational and skill-based subjects compulsory. These subjects include data management, coding, application development, artificial intelligence, music, and arts, and crafts, aiming for holistic learning as envisaged by the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020).
Furthermore, the report underscores the necessity of assessing teachers’ performance and enhancing school amenities. It calls for provisions like clean drinking water, well-stocked libraries, and ample sports facilities to create a conducive learning environment.
The suggested evaluation system will assign specific percentages to marks obtained in different classes. For Class 12 results, 15 percent will come from Class 9, 20 percent from Class 10, 25 percent from Class 11, and the remaining 40 percent from Class 12 itself.
