The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has featured a quote by Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla in its newly introduced Class 5 Environmental Studies textbook.
A part of the chapter titled Earth, Our Shared Home, the quote reflects the astronaut’s awe-struck experience of viewing our planet from space during his 18-day Axiom-4 mission.
The line reads:
“The Earth looks completely one; no border is visible from outside.”
Shukla, the first Indian to reach the International Space Station (ISS), had shared this sentiment during a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His inclusion in the textbook aligns with the integrative vision of NEP 2020, which emphasises ethical, scientific, and environmental education through culturally resonant storytelling.
The book, Our Wondrous World, offers hands-on learning with a blend of science and social context—from tips on flood safety to innovations like DIGIPIN. It also celebrates India’s diversity with references to Majuli Island, Hiware Bazar, and regional dances, while encouraging nature walks, journal writing, and student-led exploration.
By featuring Shukla’s space-borne reflections, the textbook aims to nurture a sense of planetary belonging and inspire young minds to see Earth not as a map of nations, but as a shared home.
