The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the National Sports Governance Bill and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Introduced by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during the monsoon session, the bills were cleared amid ongoing opposition protests on unrelated national issues.
The Sports Governance Bill seeks to overhaul the regulatory framework governing sports bodies across India, promising greater accountability, professionalism, and inclusivity. Minister Mandaviya described it as “the single biggest reform in sports since Independence,” emphasising its potential to empower athletes and expand opportunities for women.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Doping Amendment Bill aligns India’s anti-doping framework with global standards set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). It grants enhanced operational and institutional independence to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and the National Anti-Doping Appeal Panel, ensuring impartiality in investigations and enforcement.
Speaker Sandhya Ray presided over the session, which saw limited debate due to disruptions. Despite this, the passage of both bills marks a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of transparent and athlete-centric sports governance.
