NASA announced the development of a nuclear-powered spacecraft named Space Reactor-1 Freedom (SR-1 Freedom), designed to support a groundbreaking Mars mission later this decade.

The spacecraft will serve as the backbone of the Skyfall mission, which aims to deploy a fleet of helicopters to explore the Martian atmosphere and terrain. The launch is targeted for 2028.

SR-1 Freedom features nuclear electric propulsion (NEP), a system that uses a compact nuclear reactor to generate electricity. This electricity powers efficient electric thrusters, enabling long-duration missions with improved fuel efficiency. Unlike chemical rockets or solar-powered systems, NEP does not rely on sunlight, making it ideal for deep-space travel.

NASA officials confirmed that this marks the first time NEP will be used as the primary propulsion method for an interplanetary spacecraft. The technology differs from radioisotope thermoelectric generators used in earlier missions, which produced electricity but did not provide propulsion.

The spacecraft will carry multiple Ingenuity-class helicopters, building on the success of earlier Mars rotorcraft missions. These aerial explorers will map terrain, study atmospheric conditions, and scout locations inaccessible to rovers.

NASA described the mission as a step toward integrating nuclear power into routine space operations. Officials emphasised that nuclear propulsion could reduce travel time and increase flexibility for future human missions to Mars. The naming of SR-1 Freedom coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States, symbolising innovation and exploration.

With SR-1 Freedom, NASA is preparing for a new era of Mars exploration while laying the foundation for nuclear-powered spacecraft to become central to deep-space missions.
