Nandankanan Zoological Park has welcomed two new Asiatic lion cubs after lioness Maya gave birth during her first pregnancy, marking a significant addition to the zoo’s breeding programme.
According to zoo sources, Maya mated with lion Shibam before giving birth to the cubs. Both Maya and Shibam are pure Asiatic lions and were born to lioness Rewa.
With the arrival of the two cubs, the total lion population at Nandankanan Zoological Park has increased to 24.
Maya and newborn cubs healthy
Zoo sources said lioness Maya and her two newborn cubs are currently healthy.
Nandankanan authorities are providing dedicated care to the mother and cubs while closely monitoring their health and safety during the early stages after birth.
The birth is being viewed as an important development for the zoo’s efforts to maintain and strengthen its Asiatic lion breeding programme.
Boost to Asiatic lion conservation
The arrival of the cubs adds momentum to Nandankanan’s conservation and captive-breeding efforts for the endangered Asiatic lion.
The zoo continues to monitor the animals closely, particularly during the vulnerable period following the birth, to ensure the mother and cubs remain safe and healthy.
