Villagers discovered the carcass of a female elephant in the Muribahal range near Jamilisar village in Bolangir district, sparking concern among locals and wildlife officials.
Residents spotted the dead elephant in the forest early Tuesday and immediately informed the Forest Department. Officials and staff rushed to the site and began an investigation. Local police also joined the inquiry to assist in determining the circumstances.
Authorities confirmed that the exact cause of death remains unknown. They announced that a postmortem examination will be conducted to establish the reason. Preliminary observations revealed no external injury marks. Officials suspect possible causes such as electrocution, poisoning, disease, or other unnatural factors.
The incident added to the growing number of elephant deaths in Odisha in recent years. Conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts expressed deep concern, urging the government to strengthen protection measures. They emphasised the need to secure elephant corridors, insulate electric wires, and take strict action against poachers.
The Forest Department assured that a high-level investigation is underway. Officials promised to intensify monitoring in vulnerable areas to prevent similar tragedies.
