Multiple LPG cylinders exploded during refilling operations at roadside hotels in Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Nagar area on Saturday, triggering chaos and panic among residents and shopkeepers.
The incident occurred near Tata Ariana, where several eateries operate with gas cylinders for daily cooking.
Witnesses said the explosions began suddenly while workers handled refilling. Flames spread rapidly, and thick smoke engulfed the busy locality. Several cylinders exploded one after another, intensifying the blaze and forcing people to flee.
Two scooters parked nearby were gutted in the fire. Shopkeepers and locals rushed to safety, while others tried to move additional cylinders away from the flames. Panic gripped the area as the blaze threatened nearby hotels and shops.
Fire services personnel reached the spot quickly. Firefighters launched an operation and managed to control the blaze before it spread further. Their swift action prevented casualties and minimised damage to surrounding establishments.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries have been reported. Officials are assessing the extent of property loss and investigating the cause of the explosions. Preliminary findings suggest negligence during gas refilling.
