Notorious gangster Sunil Nahak, wanted in multiple serious criminal cases, was injured in a police encounter near Pitatali–Chikiti road in Berhampur on Friday evening after allegedly attempting to evade arrest.
According to police sources, a special operations team, acting on a tip-off, intercepted Nahak while he was travelling through a rural stretch of the area. When officers moved in to apprehend him, he reportedly tried to flee and opened fire, prompting the police to return fire. Nahak sustained bullet injuries during the brief exchange.
He was immediately shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where he is undergoing treatment under tight police security. Doctors have described his condition as stable.
Police said Nahak, a resident of Kabisuryanagar, has a long criminal history, including charges of robbery, extortion, arms smuggling, and suspected links with multiple organised crime gangs operating in southern Odisha.
Following the incident, police have stepped up patrolling and launched follow-up operations aimed at dismantling his criminal network. An investigation is underway to trace his associates and recover illegal weapons.
