A shocking incident in Indore has sparked nationwide outrage after two Australian women cricketers were allegedly stalked and molested while returning to their hotel late Thursday night.
The incident occurred ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup match at Holkar Stadium, raising concerns about women’s safety and the image of India before the international community.
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Aqueel Sheikh, allegedly followed the players on a motorcycle near a café and inappropriately touched one of them before fleeing the scene.
The cricketers immediately reported the matter to their security officer, Danny Simmons, following which a complaint was filed at the MIG Road Police Station.
Police Action and Investigation
Authorities registered a case under Sections 74 (outraging the modesty of a woman) and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police traced Sheikh through CCTV footage and arrested him within hours. Officials confirmed that the accused has a criminal background and confessed to the act, claiming he “was just saying hello out of curiosity.”
Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya condemned the incident, calling it “shameful for Indore and the country.” He assured strict punishment for the perpetrator and said, “An example must be set to prevent such crimes in the future.”
Political Reactions and Condemnations
The incident has triggered a political slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition parties, including the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Congress state president Jitendra Patwari blamed the BJP-led government for the “collapse of law and order” in Madhya Pradesh. He said, “Even our guests are not safe. This is a disgrace for the state and a failure of the administration.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi posted on X, calling the incident “disgraceful” and urged authorities to ensure safe public spaces for women.
The TMC criticized the state government, stating that the incident has “lowered India’s image globally.” Party spokesperson Sudip Raha said, “It exposes the reality of women’s safety under BJP rule.”
BJP Responds
Responding to the criticism, BJP leaders maintained that the government acted swiftly.
Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya stated that the accused was caught within hours, adding, “The government has zero tolerance toward crimes against women.”
BJP leader Ajay Singh announced that new legal measures are being considered to strengthen women’s safety and ensure stricter penalties for offenders.
Cricket Associations Condemn the Act
Both the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) condemned the incident. They called it a serious breach of security and urged authorities to guarantee the safety of all international players.
Nationwide Concern Over Women’s Safety
The case has reignited debate about women’s safety and accountability of law enforcement agencies.
Congress leader Pawan Khera urged leaders from all political parties to unite against crimes targeting women. “This is not about politics; it’s about protecting women. All parties must stand together to create a safe environment,” he said.
