Mohsin Naqvi Shrugs Off ICC Sanctions Talk, Confirms Pakistan Will Play India in T20 World Cup 2026

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi delivered a blunt response to reports of potential ICC sanctions, insisting Pakistan was unfazed, even as the country cleared the way for its men’s team to face India in the T20 World Cup 2026.

After days of uncertainty and diplomatic back-and-forth, Pakistan will now take the field against India on February 15 in Colombo, ending a week-long standoff that had cast doubt over one of cricket’s biggest fixtures.

Pakistan Gets Government Clearance for India Match

The decision came late Monday night after the Government of Pakistan granted approval for the match. The development followed a high-level meeting on February 8 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, attended by:

  • PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi

  • Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam

  • A two-member ICC delegation

Once visuals from the meeting emerged, it became increasingly clear that Pakistan was preparing for a reversal of its earlier stance.

Naqvi’s Strong Message on ICC Sanctions

Before the official confirmation, Naqvi — who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister — dismissed speculation that the ICC could penalise Pakistan for refusing to play India.

“We are not afraid of these threats at all. Everyone knows our Field Marshall, Asim Munir. We are not worried about any sanctions,” Naqvi told reporters.

By referencing Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, Naqvi underlined the government’s backing amid the controversy.

Timeline: How the U-Turn Took Shape

Earlier on Monday, Naqvi attended the Multan Sultans auction, fuelling speculation that a decision was imminent. However, around 8:30 PM IST, he indicated that the PCB was still awaiting consultations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

“We have had discussions. It would not be right for me to comment right now. Once we get their response, we will decide,” Naqvi said at the time.

Notably, the ICC had not issued any statement then. Hours later, the global body confirmed that no sanctions would be imposed on Bangladesh for its World Cup-related decisions and announced that the country would host an ICC event before 2031. This development is understood to have eased the path for Pakistan’s late-night clearance.

Naqvi’s Comments Signalled the Shift

Naqvi’s interaction with local media on February 8 offered the clearest indication that Pakistan would reverse course. Expressing satisfaction over the ICC delegation’s visit, he struck a conciliatory tone.

“We respect our guests. When a guest comes to your house, you forget and forgive many things,” he said.

The remarks were widely interpreted as confirmation that Pakistan would not boycott the marquee clash.

What We Know About PCB’s Demands

During the February 8 meeting, both the PCB and BCB reportedly placed certain demands before the ICC. While the ICC’s official statement only referenced Bangladesh, it did not detail Pakistan’s position, leaving the nature of PCB’s requests unclear.

India vs Pakistan Back on the World Cup Schedule

With government approval secured, Pakistan’s men’s team will face India as scheduled in the Group A match of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 15 in Colombo, restoring one of the tournament’s biggest attractions.
