Kylian Mbappe will miss France’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier against Iceland after sustaining a right ankle injury during the team’s 3-0 win over Azerbaijan.
The 26-year-old forward, who has scored 14 goals in 10 appearances for Real Madrid this season, picked up the injury in the 83rd minute of the match. He had already contributed one goal and one assist before limping off the field.
France coach Didier Deschamps confirmed Mbappe’s withdrawal and released him back to his club. The French Football Federation stated that no replacement will be named for the match.
France currently tops Group D with nine points from three matches. The team will travel to Reykjavik to face third-placed Iceland on Monday. Mbappe’s absence could impact France’s attacking options, but the squad remains confident heading into the fixture.
Mbappe withdraws from France squad just as he was hitting peak form. His performance against Azerbaijan showcased his influence, but the injury halted his momentum.
Medical staff assessed the injury immediately after the match. Real Madrid will now monitor his recovery closely, with hopes that he returns in time for upcoming club fixtures.
France’s campaign remains strong, but the team must adjust without its captain. Deschamps will rely on depth and experience to maintain their perfect record in the qualifiers.
