Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025.
Singh handed his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla amid speculation about a no-confidence motion by the Congress-led Opposition.
Despite the resignation, the BJP holds a majority in the Manipur Assembly with 32 MLAs, supported by members of the Naga People’s Front and JD(U).
Singh’s resignation follows ethnic violence that began nearly two years ago in May 2023, which resulted in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced.
Singh had recently met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi before submitting his resignation.
The Manipur Legislative Assembly’s 7th session is set to begin on February 10, 2025.
The BJP government has been under scrutiny for its handling of the ethnic violence in the state.
