In a tragic incident of domestic violence, a 55-year-old mason was allegedly beaten to death by his 28-year-old son with a wooden stick following a heated argument, police sources confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Somara Kujur (55), a resident of Barabasa Hadratoli Basti under Birmitrapur police station limits in Sundargarh district. The accused son is Suraj Kujur (28).
According to police, Somara Kujur, who worked as a mason in nearby villages, lived with his son Suraj. The father-son duo reportedly had frequent disputes, primarily over Suraj’s persistent alcohol consumption and lack of employment. Suraj allegedly stayed home and drank regularly, which often led to arguments.
On Friday night, a disagreement escalated into a violent altercation. In a fit of rage, Suraj reportedly struck his father multiple times with a wooden stick, causing fatal injuries. Believing his father was only unconscious, Suraj went to sleep without realizing the severity of the assault.
The next morning, Somara’s nephew Arjun Kujur visited the house to inquire about the previous night’s commotion. He discovered his uncle’s blood-soaked body and immediately alerted the Birmitrapur police.
Officer-in-Charge Ramprasad Nag rushed to the spot with a police team, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. Suraj was arrested from the scene. Based on Arjun Kujur’s written complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections of the law for murder.
The accused was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. Investigation into the motive and sequence of events is ongoing, though initial reports point to chronic family discord fueled by alcohol and unemployment as the root cause.
This incident has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of unchecked alcohol abuse and unresolved domestic conflicts in rural areas. Police have appealed to families facing similar issues to seek counseling or mediation to prevent such tragedies.
