The Machkund Dam in Odisha’s Koraput district has released its first floodwater of the 2025 monsoon season following incessant rainfall in the region.
With water levels nearing the dam’s full capacity, authorities opened two sluice gates on Thursday as a precautionary measure.
According to officials, the water level in the reservoir has reached 2,588 feet, just shy of the maximum capacity of 2,590 feet. To alleviate pressure on the dam structure and maintain safety protocols, the Water Resources Department opened gates number 6 and 7, allowing approximately 2,000 cusecs of water to flow into the downstream Chitrakonda reservoir.
“This is a routine flood control action. We are keeping close watch on inflow and rainfall activity. If required, more gates will be opened,” said a dam official.
The Machkund Dam, an important resource for hydropower generation and irrigation, regularly witnesses a surge in water levels during monsoon due to rain in Odisha and neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
Authorities have placed local teams on alert and are actively monitoring both upstream and downstream areas. As of now, no flooding or damage has been reported in nearby villages. However, with further showers expected in the coming days, additional safety measures may be implemented as needed.
