Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal to Bring Widespread Rain, Gusty Winds to Odisha; IMD Rules Out Cyclone Threat

Odisha is set to experience another extended spell of rainfall as a low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday. The weather system is likely to bring widespread rain and gusty winds across several districts of the state through the week.

According to the IMD, the system may intensify into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours, leading to continuous rainfall between October 22 and 26.

Rain, Thunderstorms Likely Across Odisha

The IMD regional centre in Bhubaneswar has forecast light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, for both coastal and interior regions of Odisha.

Districts such as Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, and Rayagada are expected to witness significant rainfall activity over the next two days. Wind speeds are likely to reach 30–40 kmph, and occasional lightning strikes may occur in isolated areas.

Rain Expected for Five to Seven Days

The IMD stated that an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
Under its influence, a low-pressure system has formed and is expected to move west-northwestwards, potentially intensifying into a depression in the next two days.

Meteorologists have warned that moisture accumulation and wind shifts will sustain rainfall activity across the state for nearly a week.

No Cyclone Threat for Now

While heavy showers and localized strong winds are likely, the IMD has clarified that there is no immediate cyclone threat. The weather office stated that the current system shows no signs of intensifying into a cyclonic storm.

“Odisha is out of the cyclone zone for now,” an IMD official said, adding that the department will issue a fresh forecast after October 21.

Rainfall intensity is expected to peak around October 24, particularly over southern and coastal Odisha. The spell of showers may continue until October 26, keeping temperatures moderate and skies overcast throughout the week.
