The Budget Session of Parliament witnessed dramatic developments as the Lok Sabha adjourned till 3 p.m. following uproar over remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi referred to the unpublished memoirs of former Army Chief M M Naravane while criticising the government’s handling of India-China clashes. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah objected, arguing that an unpublished book cannot be quoted in the House. BJP MPs protested, leading to chaos, and Speaker Om Birla adjourned proceedings.
The session also comes a day after the announcement of the India-US trade deal, which lowers reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent from 25 per cent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was felicitated by NDA members at the Parliamentary Party meeting. US President Donald Trump described Modi as a “great friend” and said they discussed issues including the Russia-Ukraine war.
All eyes are now on Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled address to the Motion of Thanks to President Droupadi Murmu’s speech tomorrow, February 4. BJP MP Tejashwi Surya backed the motion on Monday, setting the stage for a crucial debate.
