In an extraordinary act of humanity, 22-year-old Chandra Shekhar Nayak from Dukum village has left an enduring legacy by saving five lives through organ donation.
Following a tragic road accident on the day of Holi, Chandra Shekhar was declared brain-dead after sustaining a severe head injury. He had been on ventilator support at JEMS Medical College in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh.
In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring decision, his father, Krushna Chandra Nayak, requested the hospital authorities to donate his son’s organs. “If my son’s life cannot be saved, let his organs give others a chance to live,” he pleaded. Medical authorities acted promptly and coordinated with senior doctors from Chennai and Hyderabad to retrieve his kidneys, lungs, liver, and heart.
Through the state’s “green corridor” initiative, his harvested organs were airlifted to Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam hospitals to be transplanted into critically ill patients. Keshav, a transplant coordinator at the medical centre, confirmed the lifesaving organ transplants would benefit five recipients. The altruistic act has garnered admiration from the local community, with many praising Chandra Shekhar’s family for their selflessness.
Chandra Shekhar’s family expressed their solace in knowing that his death has sparked new life for others, underscoring the poignant saying that life continues even after death. Authorities believe the young man had pledged his organs as part of the Jeevan Daan Yojana initiative.
This profound gesture of compassion sheds light on the transformative power of organ donation, inspiring others to consider giving the gift of life.
