The Koraput district administration on Sunday withdrew its earlier order banning the sale of non-vegetarian food items on Republic Day, January 26, 2026. The decision was announced by District Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan through a post on social media platform X, offering immediate relief to traders and residents.
With the withdrawal, the restrictions will no longer be enforced across the district on Republic Day. The move follows criticism from various sections over the earlier directive, which had imposed a district-wide ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food.
Earlier Administrative Order
Earlier, the district administration had ordered a complete ban on the sale of eggs, fish, chicken, mutton, and other non-vegetarian items on Republic Day. The decision was issued as part of administrative guidelines aimed at observing the national occasion with uniformity.
A formal directive had been sent to Block Development Officers, Tahsildars, and Executive Officers, instructing them to ensure strict compliance across urban and rural areas. Residents were also appealed to observe the national day by opting for vegetarian food.
Public Reaction and Withdrawal
The order, described as the first such restriction in Koraput on Republic Day, triggered mixed reactions. While some supported the decision, others criticised it, pointing out that Republic Day is a national celebration and not a religious observance.
Several voices questioned the need for a blanket ban and suggested regulation instead of restriction. The administration’s decision to withdraw the order came after objections were raised from multiple quarters, reflecting public concerns and feedback.
