Guwahati: Khalistani terrorist Amritpal Singh would contest the Lok Sabha polls from the Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab, said Rajdev Singh Khalsa, the lawyer of the radical preacher.
Khalsa met Singh on Wednesday in the Dibrugarh jail. Upon request, Singh gave his approval and intended to fight election as an independent candidate, said Khalsa. As per law, if an accused has not been convicted in any case, he can contest elections while in jail, filing his nomination from jail through a representative and send it to the Election Commission.
According to officials, Singh’s family members arrived in Dibrugarh early in the morning on Thursday to meet him. Singh’s father Tarsem Singh said his son was not interested in joining politics but could not confirm about his decision for now.
The chief of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit Amritpal Singh, is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail under National Security Act. He was arrested in April 2023 along with nine of his associates. Last year he with his supporters attacked a police station in Amritsar.
