A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Chhattisgarh has granted bail to two Kerala nuns and an accomplice in a case involving allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion.
The court accepted bail pleas filed by all three accused—two of whom are nuns—and issued a directive requiring each to furnish a bond of Rs 50,000. Additionally, the court ordered the surrender of their passports to ensure compliance with legal proceedings.
The third accused, identified as Sukhman Mandavi, was also granted bail. The incident had sparked significant political and public attention, with CPIM supporters reportedly celebrating outside the jail premises following the verdict.
The arrest had earlier triggered heated debates around religious freedom and anti-trafficking laws in India. As the investigation unfolds, legal experts continue to monitor the implications of this high-profile case.
