In a surprising turn of events, Jos Buttler has announced his resignation as captain of the England cricket team after their early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The 34-year-old cricketer will step down following England’s final match against South Africa, scheduled for Saturday in Karachi.

In a press conference on Friday, Buttler explained his decision, stating, “It’s the right decision for me, it’s the right decision for the team, and hopefully, somebody else can come in and work closely with [Brendon McCullum] to help take the team back to where it needs to be.” He emphasized the importance of the tournament for his leadership and expressed disappointment over the team’s performance, especially after losses to Australia and Afghanistan.

Despite his enthusiasm for working with the recently appointed coach, Brendon McCullum, Buttler felt it was the right time for a leadership change. He described the opportunity to captain his country as an “immense honor” and did not perceive his resignation as a relief.

As the team prepares for its final match in the tournament, finding Buttler’s successor will undoubtedly be a key focus for England cricket moving forward.
