Rayagada jaundice outbreak

Rayagada town has reported a spread of jaundice, with several cases emerging in areas such as Kasturi Nagar, Indira Nagar, and near the CRPF camp.

Local residents initially sought treatment at the city hospital, where doctors diagnosed viral fever. However, private consultations later confirmed jaundice, prompting immediate medical care.

Reports suggest that children between the ages of 10 and 20 have been affected. Some residents have turned to herbal remedies, while others continue formal treatment. Locals allege that piped water supplied by the public health department has been muddy for months, and sanitation in the area remains poor.

Following complaints, District Public Health Officer Ruma Mahapatra, along with doctors Srinibas Sahu and Sangram Keshari Nimal, led a health department team to the affected areas. The team conducted door‑to‑door surveys, collected information, and took water samples from households with reported cases.

Dr Mahapatra stated that the cause of jaundice will be confirmed after water testing. She also noted that contaminated food from hotels and outside sources could contribute to the spread. While some patients have shown improvement, doctors advised continued caution and preventive measures.
