The sacred Rath Pratistha Puja was performed on Thursday for the grand wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, marking an important milestone ahead of the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 in Puri, Odisha.
The traditional consecration ceremony was conducted by servitors following age-old rituals and Vedic chants. The puja formally sanctifies the three newly built chariots before they carry the sibling deities during the annual Rath Yatra.
The ritual is one of the final religious ceremonies before the deities begin their divine journey from the Shree Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, a procession witnessed by lakhs of devotees from India and across the world.
Rath Pratistha Puja Holds Special Religious Significance
The Rath Pratistha Puja is a sacred ritual that invokes divine blessings for the chariots before the annual procession begins. Every year, three new wooden chariots are handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional methods passed down through generations.
Unlike many temple festivals, the chariots used during the Jagannath Rath Yatra are newly constructed every year, reflecting the festival’s emphasis on renewal, devotion and sacred tradition.
Three Chariots Ready for the Divine Journey
Following the consecration ceremony, the majestic chariots stand ready to carry the Holy Trinity along Bada Danda (Grand Road) during the Rath Yatra.
Thousands of devotees have gathered in Puri to witness the grand festival, which is regarded as one of the largest and most significant religious processions in the world.
Jagannath Rath Yatra Begins Today
During the annual festival, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra travel from the Shree Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, symbolising divine love, compassion and the Lord’s desire to bless devotees beyond the temple premises.
The festival also conveys the message of equality, as people from different communities and backgrounds join together to pull the sacred chariots, expressing collective devotion and faith.
With the completion of the Rath Pratistha Puja, preparations for the grand procession have entered their final stage as Puri gets ready to welcome lakhs of pilgrims for the sacred chariot festival.
