The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another milestone today with the successful launch of its heaviest communication satellite, CMS-03, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The satellite was launched aboard the LVM3-M5, popularly known as ‘Bahubali’, for its exceptional heavy-lift capacity.

The launch took place on schedule at 5:26 PM (IST), marking a major step forward in India’s space communication capabilities.

Record-Breaking Heavy-Lift Mission

The CMS-03 satellite, weighing around 4,410 kg, is the heaviest satellite ever launched from Indian soil into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The mission further strengthens India’s position in advanced communication and broadcasting technologies.

The LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3), also referred to as the GSLV Mk-III, is a three-stage heavy-lift rocket equipped with:

  • Two solid motor strap-ons (S200)

  • A liquid propellant core stage (L110)

  • A cryogenic upper stage (C25)

This configuration allows the LVM3 to carry payloads up to 4,000 kg into GTO, giving ISRO a significant boost in self-reliance for heavy satellite launches.

Fifth Operational Flight of LVM3

The LVM3-M5 mission marks the fifth operational flight of ISRO’s powerful launch vehicle. Ahead of the launch, the 43.5-meter-tall rocket was fully assembled and integrated with the CMS-03 spacecraft before being transported to the second launch pad for final pre-launch operations.

According to ISRO, this successful mission further validates the reliability of the LVM3 rocket family, which continues to serve as India’s workhorse for high-capacity communication and deep space missions.

CMS-03: Enhancing India’s Communication Network

Once in orbit, CMS-03 will play a crucial role in expanding India’s communication coverage, supporting digital connectivity, television broadcasting, and emergency communication services across the nation.

This achievement reinforces India’s growing leadership in space technology and its commitment to creating affordable, self-reliant, and inclusive communication infrastructure.
