Untimely Ratha Yatra of ISKCON

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has voiced strong concerns regarding the untimely Ratha Yatra celebrations conducted by ISKCON outside of the traditional schedule.

ISKCON has sparked controversy once again by organising an untimely Rath Yatra in Sandton, South Africa. Despite previous concerns raised by devotees and religious scholars, the event took place outside the traditional Jagannath festival calendar. Images and videos shared on ISKCON’s social media channels confirm that the procession occurred.

Sudarsan Pattnaik, an advocate for preserving the cultural and religious sanctity of the festival, has urged the Odisha Chief Minister to intervene and ensure that the Ratha Yatra is celebrated according to the official calendar set by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration.

Jai Jagannath 🙏
again, very unfortunate to see Shri Jagannath Ratra Yatra was already celebrated in Africa by ISKCON . After so many request from @SJTA_Puri and all the devotees , again they have deviated the unification of Ratha Yatra dates to preserve the cultural and… https://t.co/yaQ9dV1KaP

Expressing his discontent on social media, Pattnaik emphasised that conducting the festival on arbitrary dates undermines the sacred traditions associated with Lord Jagannath. He highlighted the importance of adhering to the authentic festival date observed in Puri, Odisha, to maintain consistency and respect for Jagannath culture.

This is not the first time ISKCON has deviated from the established Rath Yatra schedule. Just last week, a similar event was held in London, sparking heated debates among devotees. Pattnaik expressed his disappointment, stating that such actions diminish the sanctity of Jagannath culture.

In response to the growing dissatisfaction among followers of traditional Jagannath rituals, ISKCON has not issued any official statements. As the frequency of these celebrations outside Puri’s customary Rath Yatra increases, concerns about preserving authentic traditions are mounting.

While ISKCON has been organising Rath Yatras in various locations around the world, the controversy surrounding the untimely celebration in Africa has particularly outraged devotees and traditionalists. Critics argue that hosting the procession outside the sanctioned time disrupts deep-rooted customs and causes cultural and religious discontent among Jagannath followers globally.

Pattnaik has called upon the government and temple authorities to address this issue, ensuring that Lord Jagannath’s annual chariot festival remains aligned with traditional rituals and sacred observances.
