In a significant diplomatic manoeuvre, India has begun evacuating its nationals from Iran after Tehran temporarily lifted its airspace restrictions.
The move comes amid escalating military tensions between Iran and Israel that had previously led to a suspension of regular flight operations.
Approximately 1,000 Indian citizens, including students, are en route to New Delhi as part of “Operation Sindhu”—a mission launched by the Indian government to ensure the safety of its people stuck in conflict zones. Charter flights by Mahan Air from Mashhad have been deployed for this urgent effort.
Iran’s decision to open its skies exclusively for Indian evacuation flights is viewed as a notable exception amid the continued closure of its airspace to other international flights. The operation follows earlier success in moving 110 Indian students via Armenia earlier this week.
Indian embassies in Tehran and Yerevan have worked in close coordination to facilitate logistics, border movement, and charter arrangements. The Embassy of India in Tel Aviv has also commenced preparations to evacuate Indian citizens from Israel by land routes.
This evacuation underscores India’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad while navigating a volatile geopolitical landscape. As tensions flare in the Middle East, the government’s swift response through Operation Sindhu reflects both preparedness and diplomatic foresight.
