Watching the Indian Premier League (IPL) live from stadiums is set to become significantly more expensive for fans.
The Central Government has revised the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on IPL tickets, increasing it from 28% to a steep 40%, placing it in the highest tax bracket alongside casinos and race clubs.
Under the new regime, a ticket with a base price of Rs 1,000 will now cost Rs 1,400, compared to the previous Rs 1,280. This change will take effect from September 22, just ahead of the next IPL season.
Interestingly, while IPL tickets face a higher tax burden, international cricket matches in India will become more affordable. The 28% GST previously applied to these matches has been abolished. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, tickets for “recognised sporting events” will now attract only 18% GST if priced above Rs 500.
The move has sparked mixed reactions among fans and stakeholders. While some argue that the IPL’s entertainment value justifies the hike, others worry it may discourage stadium attendance and impact the overall fan experience.
