Lionel Messi marked his return to the pitch with flair, registering two crucial assists to guide Inter Miami to a 2–1 victory over Atlas FC in the Leagues Cup 2025 opener.
After serving a one-game suspension alongside teammate Jordi Alba, Messi showed no signs of rust, orchestrating Miami’s attacking efforts with precision.
Messi first set up Telasco Segovia for the opener in the 58th minute. Atlas responded through Rivaldo Lozano in the 82nd, levelling the score and setting up a tense finish. However, it was Messi’s final assist—delivered in the dying seconds to Marcelo Weigandt—that sealed the win. Initially flagged for offside, the goal was confirmed following a VAR review, sending the Miami crowd into celebration.
With five assists and eight goals across July, Messi continues to prove his game-altering impact. The match also saw the debut of Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul for Inter Miami, adding depth to the squad’s midfield.
Inter Miami’s strong start to the Leagues Cup reinforces their status as serious contenders, driven by Messi’s brilliance and a resilient team effort.
