As the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand approaches, India vice-captain Shubman Gill speaks about the team’s mindset and approach.
Reflecting on India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024, Gill emphasizes the importance of momentum. “Once you get one title, that breaks the jinx and it gives you the momentum and you are not very desperate about getting the title,” he said. Gill believes that avoiding desperation and handling pressure effectively increases the team’s chances of winning.
Gill praised India’s powerful batting line-up, describing it as the best he has ever been a part of, with seasoned players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma providing depth and freedom to the top order. “The depth we have offers freedom to the top order. We used to struggle earlier when we didn’t have as much depth. There was pressure on the top order,” he added.
Regarding his own performance, Gill mentioned that he will maintain his approach for the final, staying in his zone and taking risks at the right moments. As vice-captain, he focuses on communication and ensuring young players are thinking the right way under pressure.
With a balanced attitude and strong batting line-up, India is poised for their third Champions Trophy title. The final showdown promises to be a thrilling battle against New Zealand.
