In a landmark achievement for medical science, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully removed India’s largest reported kidney mass, weighing an astonishing 8.7 kg.
This breakthrough surgery was performed on a 50-year-old patient suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), bringing immense relief after years of pain and discomfort.
The high-risk procedure, lasting five hours, was spearheaded by Dr. Manoj Kumar Das, Associate Professor of Urology, with vital support from Dr. Sambit Tripathy, Assistant Professor, and a dedicated team of young resident doctors. Their precision and collaborative effort ensured the surgery’s success.
Contributing to this monumental success were the anaesthesia team, led by Dr. Pooja Bihani, alongside skilled nursing officers Ms. Shreya and Ms. Parineeta, and other operating theatre staff. Their unwavering commitment ensured that every aspect of the procedure was flawlessly executed.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Das remarked, “This was more than a medical success—it was a testament to teamwork, trust, and dedication. We thank the patient’s family for their faith and AIIMS Bhubaneswar for its exceptional support.” He also acknowledged the Executive Director, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, and Dr. Prasant Nayak, Head of Urology, for their continuous encouragement.
This milestone surgery reinforces AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s role as a centre of advanced and compassionate medical care, setting a new benchmark in urology and surgical innovation.
